Some of the best tech volunteers in your church aren’t seasoned professionals. They’re students.
For many churches, inviting students into the production booth can feel like a big step. After all, Sunday mornings matter. Lyrics need to be right. Slides need to advance on time. Everything feels too important to risk mistakes. But here’s something many teams are discovering:
Students often become some of the most capable, engaged, and passionate ProPresenter operators on the team.
Students already speak technology
Today’s students have grown up surrounded by technology. Touchscreens. Apps. Streaming. Video editing. Audio controls. Live content.
What may feel technical or intimidating to adults often feels completely natural to them. They’re used to learning software by exploring it, clicking through menus, and figuring things out as they go. That curiosity is incredibly valuable in a production environment.
While experienced volunteers sometimes worry about “breaking something,” students tend to jump in ready to learn. They experiment. They adapt quickly. And with just a little coaching, many pick up ProPresenter workflows faster than expected.
The booth is more than a 'job'. It’s discipleship.
Inviting students into production isn’t just about filling a volunteer gap. It’s about investing in people. When students are trusted with real responsibility, something powerful happens:
- Confidence grows
- Teamwork skills develop
- Ownership increases
- Faith becomes active, not passive

Production builds real-World skills
Serving on a production team teaches lessons that extend far beyond Sunday mornings. Students learn how to:
- Work under pressure
- Communicate with a team
- Follow service flow
- Pay attention to detail
- Support others behind the scenes
These are all powerful leadership skills. Many churches have seen students discover passions for media, worship, broadcasting, or technology simply because someone invited them into the booth.
Today’s lyric operator could be tomorrow’s production director, creative leader, or even ministry staff member.
Start small and set them up to win
You don’t need to hand over the entire production system on day one. The best approach is gradual involvement. Start with simple, confidence-building roles such as advancing lyrics during worship, triggering announcement slides, organizing playlists during the week or before practice, or shadowing experienced operators.
Give clear expectations. Stay nearby. Offer encouragement. Mistakes will happen and that’s okay. Every experienced operator learned the same way. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s growth.
Coaching matters more than expertise
Students don’t need perfect technical knowledge to succeed. They need mentors. Take time to:
- Explain why things happen in a service
- Walk through workflows slowly
- Celebrate progress, not just performance
- Affirm their contributions regularly
A quick “Great job today” after service can make a lasting impact. When students feel supported, they become dependable faster than you might expect.

You’re building future leaders
When you invite students into production, you’re doing more than running ProPresenter well this Sunday. You’re raising up future leaders.
You’re giving young people a place to serve, grow, and discover how their gifts can support ministry. Many lifelong church leaders first found their place behind a soundboard or computer screen. The booth becomes more than a technical space. It becomes a training ground.
